Chicago would seem to be on quite a roll these days. The city is a leading contender to host the Summer Olympics in 2016. The hometown Cubs had the most wins of any team in the National League last year and are one of the early favorites to win the 2009 World Series. And, of course, one of its own just became the most powerful person in the world (we're not talking about Oprah either, but she's close).
So with all of the good vibes coming out of Chicago, how does it show up as the third worst city on our second annual list of America's Most Miserable Cities?
Lousy weather, long commutes, rising unemployment and the highest sales tax rate in the country are to blame for the Windy City being near the top of our list. High rates of corruption by public officials didn't help either.

Passing through the Fort Myers, Fla., airport a few weeks ago, I noticed people eagerly signing up for a free bus tour of foreclosed real estate — with all properties offering water views. During the ride to my hotel, the young driver volunteered that he’d just bought his first house, paying $65,000 for a foreclosed property in nearby Cape Coral that had last sold for over $250,000. He said he’d never expected to be able to buy anything on a driver’s salary, let alone something that nice. Continue...

Obama to back public plan in high-stakes health speech
President to lay out reform goals, tell Americans how plan will work for them
By Robert Schroeder, MarketWatch
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Facing steep stakes and declining poll numbers, President Barack Obama on Wednesday night will appear in a rarely used, high-profile forum to drive home his top domestic policy priority.
Obama will address a joint session of Congress, with TV cameras sending his speech around the nation and world, to outline his goals for health-care reorganization.
Obama will press for a government-run insurance option as part of a sweeping overhaul of the nation's health-care system and explain to Americans how he wants to change one of the country's biggest and most wide-reaching industries.
"The president, I think, has a few main goals tonight," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Wednesday morning. "To speak clearly to the American people about what's in health-care reform; for those that are fortunate to have insurance, to demonstrate for them that his plan will bring them security and stability; and for those that don't have health insurance, that we'll provide an affordable way for them to get accessible insurance."
